CSR periodically evaluates our chartered study sections and recurrent special emphasis panels to keep them aligned with the progress of science, to ensure that they are appropriately competitive, and to keep workloads are manageable. Key to this process is the perspective of the external scientific community. CSR assembles sample applications from groups of scientifically related study sections and asks a special review panel of highly respected and experienced reviewers to assess the fit between the study sections, as currently defined, and the science of the field. The committees are given broad latitude to recommend structural changes, including creating, terminating and modifying the scope of study sections. Final decisions on changes are made by the CSR Advisory Council.
