Dr. El-Zaatari serves as the Scientific Review Officer (SRO) for the HIBP study section. He has more than 25 years of experience in biomedical research and has been a member of several national and international scientific societies.
After receiving his NIH-supported Ph.D. in biological sciences, he held NIH postdoctoral positions at the University of Southern California, University of Minnesota and UT-Southwestern Medical School. He then joined Baylor College of Medicine as an assistant and associate Professor for 14 years before he came to the NIH. Dr. El-Zaatari’s research concentrated on the etiology and molecular immune response to gastrointestinal infections in Crohn’s disease, sarcoidosis and peptic ulcers. He has more than 70 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He received an NIH R01 award and the “2002 Researcher of the Year Award” from Houston Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. Dr. El-Zaatari initially served, in CSR, as the SRO for small business applications in the area of infectious diseases for 6 years before he assumed his current service. He joined CSR in March 2003.
