Dr. Antonello Pileggi received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pavia in Italy, where he trained in the department of surgery.
He joins NIH after 17 years with the University of Miami, where he had postdoctoral training and then advanced in the faculty rank as assistant (2002-09), associate (2009-14) and full (2014-15) professor in the cell transplant division of the department of surgery, with secondary appointments in biomedical engineering, microbiology and immunology. He directed the Preclinical Cell Processing and Translational Models Program (2003-15) at the Cell Transplant Center in the Diabetes Research Institute, leading and contributing to multiple team science, transdisciplinary, translational and clinical projects in the fields of cellular and solid organ transplantation, diabetes, pancreatic islet biology, immunology and regenerative medicine. He chaired the Scientific Award Committee of the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami (2013-15). Member of several professional associations, he served in editorial capacity for scientific journals, reviewed research applications for national and international agencies, and lectured at national and international institutions. He has authored 20 book chapters and over 150 peer-reviewed scientific publications.
