Epidemiological research designs and methodologies reviewed in NAME include cohort; case-control; prospective; longitudinal; retrospective; clinical trial; cross-sectional; surveillance, and meta-analysis. Applications that use animal or other models are excluded. In addition, NAME does not generally review applications that include clinical trials to reduce the impact of a disease/condition that has already occurred (i.e., secondary prevention), or to alleviate the impact of an ongoing disease/condition (tertiary prevention).

The List of Reviewers lists all present, whether permanent or temporary, to provide the full scope of expertise present on that date. Lists are posted 30 days before the meeting and are tentative, pending any last minute changes.

Topics

  • Determinants, predictors, and biomarkers of neurological disorders, conditions related to aging, musculoskeletal conditions, communication and visual disorders in large human population samples. Included are risk and protective factors, molecular, environmental, pharmacological, dietary, metabolomic, microbiome, behavioral and social factors.
  • Identification of genetic, epigenetic, and gene-environment interactions associated with neurological disorders, conditions related to aging, musculoskeletal conditions, communication and visual disorders in large human population samples
  • The geographic and secular distribution and patterns of neurological disorders, conditions related to aging, musculoskeletal conditions, communication and visual disorders in large human population samples.

Shared Interests and Overlaps

Genetics of Health and Disease (GHD) : Applications related to genetics, epigenetics or genetic epidemiology of neurological, aging, musculoskeletal, communication and visual disorders are reviewed in NAME. Applications focused on the discovery and development of genetic and genomic methodologies are reviewed in GHD.

Infectious, Reproductive, Asthma and Pulmonary Conditions (IRAP) : Both IRAP and NAME review applications focused on environmental exposures during pregnancy related to neurological conditions. If neurological outcomes are assessed on the progeny or in children in later life, the application is generally reviewed in NAME while applications that focus on the perinatal period and pregnancy-related outcomes are reviewed in IRAP.

Aging Systems and Geriatrics Study Section (ASG) : Both ASG and NAME review applications focused on age-related conditions. Applications related to the epidemiology of age-related conditions are reviewed in NAME. Applications that focus on physiological and/or mechanistic aspects of age-related conditions are reviewed in ASG.

Biostatistical Methods and Research Design Study Section (BMRD) : Applications that focus on the development of novel statistical methods and research designs are reviewed in BRMD while applications that use statistical methods and research designs to study the epidemiology of neurological, aging, musculoskeletal, communication or visual disorders are reviewed in NAME.

Clinical Neuroscience and Neurodegeneration Study Section (CNN) : Both CNN and NAME review applications on human chronic neurodegenerative and neurocognitive diseases. Applications related to the epidemiology of these conditions are reviewed in NAME. Applications that focus on the mechanisms and management of these conditions, development of therapeutic strategies, and development of biomarkers are reviewed in CNN.

Skeletal Biology Development and Disease Study Section (SBDD) : Both SBDD and NAME review applications on skeletal conditions. Applications related to the epidemiology of these conditions are reviewed in NAME. Applications dealing with basic and translational aspects of normal and abnormal skeletal development and bone diseases are reviewed in SBDD.
