The F03A study section reviews fellowship applications on the basic cellular and molecular biology of neural and other excitable cells. Studies proposed in these applications may examine the fundamental mechanisms of neuronal cell function, including mechanisms relevant to specific disease processes. Applications examining the basic molecular and cellular processes leading to cell specification, differentiation and development including mechanisms that specify or influence migratory events are also reviewed here. Studies examining regeneration of neuronal connectivity as well as the consequences of exposure to psychoactive drugs on the above processes are also reviewed in F03A. F03A covers broad and inter-related areas with the primary emphasis on basic cellular and molecular neurobiology using animal or cell-based model systems.

- The cellular and molecular mechanisms of synaptogenesis and synaptic plasticity
- The cellular and molecular mechanisms by which extra- and intracellular signals are transduced in neural and excitable cells
- Neuronal trafficking including membrane vesicle trafficking, cytoskeleton and cell adhesion molecules
- Neural development and molecular mechanisms impacting the related diseases/disorders
- Proliferation, differentiation, and migration of neural/glial progenitors and stem cells, including cell lineage, cell fate specification, and neural patterning
- Cellular and molecular mechanisms of axon and dendritic guidance, outgrowth and regeneration
- Molecular mechanisms underlying retinal development and degeneration
- Genetic and epigenetic mechanisms, and the regulation of gene expression
- Myelin and glial biology, including neuroinflammation, myelination and remyelination
- Redox biology in the nervous system, molecular mechanisms of the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress
Shared Interests and Overlaps
Fellowship panels are broad and cover inter-related areas. Assignments are made based on the primary emphasis of the proposed research. There are some overlaps between topics reviewed by fellowship study sections. For any application that may fall between primary areas of study, the CSR Division of Receipt and Referral, Review Branch chiefs, and SROs confer to place it properly and to ensure that all appropriate expertise is brought to bear.
Topics on the basic physiology, cellular and molecular biology of the brain overlap with Biophysical, Physiological, Pharmacological and Bioengineering Neuroscience, and Vision [F03B] fellowship study section, when the focus is on structural and functional studies of ion channels, transporters and signal transducers.
Studies on genetic, molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurodevelopment, neurodegeneration, and neuroimmunology overlap with Brain Disorders and Related Neurosciences [F01A], Neurodegeneration and Aging [F03C], Cell Biology, Developmental Biology and Bioengineering [F05D], and [F05Q], Infectious Diseases and Immunology (F07A, F07B or F07C) fellowship study sections.
Applications where the primary focus is sensory or behavioral neuroscience may be reviewed in Behavioral Neuroscience [F02A] or Sensory and Motor Neuroscience Cognition and Perception Neuroscience [F02B] fellowship study sections, respectively.
