Dr. Rich Lovering received his Ph.D. in rehabilitation sciences at the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) School of Medicine. His graduate work utilized animal models to study underlying mechanisms of skeletal muscle injury and recovery. His post-doctoral work was in the Department of Physiology at the UMB School of Medicine, where he developed novel in vivo physiology measurements to study the role of intermediate filaments in skeletal muscle and mouse genetic models of muscular dystrophies. He continued his work as a faculty member in the physiology department and then as an associate professor in the Department of Orthopaedics, where he utilized new diagnostic tools and treatments on a wide variety of musculoskeletal pathologies. Dr. Lovering has taught extensively to medical and graduate students and served on numerous NIH study sections. He has over 140 research publications and had 18 years of independent continuous NIH funding before joining the Center for Scientific Review at NIH.
