Dr. Aiwu Cheng received her medical degree in China and earned her Ph.D. in physiology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, where her dissertation research focused on abnormal brain development in Down syndrome. She subsequently joined the National Institute on Aging (NIA) Laboratory of Neuroscience, first as a postdoctoral fellow and later as a senior research scientist. She then joined the Laboratory of Genetics and Genomics at NIA as a biologist. Over the past 20 years, her research career has spanned neuroscience, cellular and molecular biology, and developmental biology. Her interdisciplinary research has focused on brain development, aging, neurodegenerative diseases, mitochondrial biology, genetics and genomics, and dietary interventions for the prevention and treatment of neurological disorders. She has also mentored many post-baccalaureate trainees, Ph.D. students, and postdoctoral fellows at NIA. Prior to joining the Center for Scientific Review (CSR), she served as a Scientific Review Officer (SRO) at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR).
