Dr. Shilpakala Ketha obtained her Ph.D. in microbial genetics from the University of Madras, which focused on the inactivation of DNA gyrases in bacteria through small molecules and antisense RNA. Following this, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), where her research primarily focused on microbial intervention, specifically pathogen detection and pathogen reduction, with a focus on the safety of blood and blood products utilizing antimicrobial peptides. This research led to a patent and multiple publications. Subsequently, she served as the scientific review officer at the Department of Defense (DOD), overseeing several panels, including those for Parkinson's disease, ALS, rare cancers, and MS, among others. She later joined the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) as an SRO, during which she managed numerous high-impact reviews, encompassing a wide range of complex grants and contract reviews. Additionally, she has significantly contributed to the management of peer review systems implemented across NIH.
