Biography

Division:
Division of Basic and Integrative Biological Sciences DBIB
Review Branch:
Macromolecular Biophysics and Biological Chemistry MBBC

Dr. Mir Ahamed Hossain received his Ph.D. in biochemistry and pursued postdoctoral training in neuropharmacology and cellular and molecular neuroscience before joining the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1997, where he was later promoted to the academic rank of associate professor. His research expertise is in experimental neuroscience, centered on neonatal brain injury, ischemic stroke, and neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s disease and aging. Dr. Hossain’s laboratory at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine investigated neurotoxicity/cell death mechanisms, intracellular second messenger signaling pathways, cell-based gene delivery in the brain, and gene regulation toward the assessment of mechanisms to achieve neuroprotection and improve functional outcomes. In 2018, Dr. Hossain joined NINDS as a Scientific Review Officer (SRO) before moving to the CSR. There, he managed BRAIN Initiative tools and technology development grants, NIH Loan Repayment Programs, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and related disorders, VCID, and RM1 team science grant mechanisms.
