The Imaging and Bioengineering Technology for Visual Systems (IBV) study section reviews applications on the development and translation of novel imaging and bioengineering technologies for the study of visual systems. The study section is primarily focused upon imaging and technology development and methods as well as ocular device engineering and bioengineering approaches for treatment of eye injury and correction for refraction error or corneal remodeling. Therapeutic formulation and drug delivery devices using in vivo models or ex vivo globes are also suitable topics.

Membership Panel

The membership panel is a list of chartered members only.

Topics

  • Development of optical microscopy and other imaging modalities, such as high/super-resolution, NIRs and adaptive optics, for visualizing cells and circuitry in the eye utilizing light/optical approaches.
  • Development of treatments for eye injury and diseases utilizing therapeutics and other bioengineering approaches.
  • Development of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), ultrasound and photo-acoustic imaging for use in the eye.
  • Imaging and modeling of blood flow, oxygen saturation, mechanical properties, visual function, and other novel intrinsic contrasts.
  • Novel technological approaches to molecular imaging and optogenetics in ocular applications.
  • Ophthalmic imaging applications that emphasize technical development, rather than the application of new technologies to investigate the biology of or disorders of vision.
  • Development of contrast agents for including nanoparticles, for ocular applications.
  • Therapeutic formulations and drug delivery strategies for treatment of ocular disorders: refinements for targeted bioavailability, improved efficacy using in vivo models or ex vivo globes.
  • Bioengineering approaches for treatment of eye injury and correction of refractive error: corneal remodeling, other approaches or ocular device engineering.
  • Development of low vision technologies such as assistive devices for wayfinding, vision rehabilitation tools and techniques, new resources for vision testing.
  • Development of technology for and correction of refractive error.

Shared Interests and Overlaps

There are shared interests in hemodynamics and visual function with Imaging Technology for Neuroscience (ITN). Applications focused on the optic nerve and globes are to be reviewed in IBV.  Brain centric applications will be reviewed in ITN. Applications that emphasize OCT, optical and ultrasound techniques will be reviewed in IBV. Applications that emphasize MRI modalities are to be reviewed in ITN.

There are shared interests in optical, OCT and photoacoustic imaging with Neuromodulation and Imaging of Neuronal Circuits (NINC). Applications that emphasize predominantly the eye are reviewed in IBV. Applications that emphasize brain imaging and neuromodulation are reviewed in NINC.

There are shared interests in devices, ocular therapeutic formulations and drug delivery methods with Bioengineering and Tissue Engineering for Neuroscience (BTEN). Applications that emphasize tissue engineering, in vivo and ex vivo globe models are to be reviewed in IBV. Applications that emphasize retinal or visual (cortical) prosthetic devices are reviewed in BTEN.

There are shared interests in vision topics with Pathophysiology of Eye Disease 1 (PED1) and Pathophysiology of Eye Disease 2 (PED 2).  For applications that use imaging for discovery or are focused on imaging analyses, those applications are to be reviewed in IBV. For applications that use standard imaging techniques as a tool for more disease centric topics, will be reviewed in PED 1 or 2.
