After receiving a Ph.D. in nutritional sciences, Dr. James served for 11 years at the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), where she began as a grants administrator for the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) in the Division of Food Safety and Nutrition. Her later years at USDA were spent at the National Agricultural Library (NAL) as the leader of the Food Safety Research Information Office (FSRIO) and its digital information products for food scientists in academia, government, and industry. While at NAL, she conducted evidence synthesis for research on edible insects, Salmonella risk profiles, and the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI), specifically the macronutrients evidence review of carbohydrates and fatty acids. In addition, she served a dual appointment as the agency’s executive director for employee engagement. Prior to joining the federal workforce, she was the state coordinator of the Washington, DC Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Co-PI of its obesity intervention program. She was later appointed to be the state-level Child Nutrition program manager and Director of USDA Team Nutrition training grants. Dr. James is an AmeriCorps alumnus, former peer reviewer and grant writer, and instructor of undergraduate and master’s-level nutrition students.
