Dr. Raul Covian received his Ph.D. in biomedical sciences from the Institute of Cell Physiology at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and worked at the National Institute of Cardiology in Mexico City studying mitochondrial metabolism. He obtained postdoctoral training at Dartmouth Medical School in biochemistry and spectroscopy with a focus on the structure and function of mitochondrial respiratory protein complexes. Dr. Covian then joined the Laboratory of Cardiac Energetics at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) as a staff scientist, where he worked for 14 years developing non-invasive optical techniques to characterize heart physiology. Prior to joining CSR, he was a scientific review officer at NHLBI.
