He then did postdoctoral training in the Center for Biophysical Modeling and Simulation at the University of Utah in Salt Lake. He then worked at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, where he was an assistant professor in the department of chemistry and biochemistry. His research focused on using molecular modeling to study the link between protein structure, function and dynamics.

Dr. Thorpe then went on to General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT), where he was a scientific review manager and coordinated peer review for the Product Development Research and Prevention grant programs of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas.
