Dr. Simone Chebabo Weiner obtained a Ph.D. in biophysics/physiology from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and has a background in pharmacy. During her graduate training, she studied the role of GABA and glutamate in brain edema excitability, using electrophysiological recordings. Her Ph.D. training was performed through a conjoined program between the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro and Duke University. Dr. Weiner completed her post-doctoral training at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where she used patch clamp whole-cell recording to study the cellular mechanisms involved in the excitability caused by organophosphates in cultured hippocampal neurons and in hippocampal slices. Before coming to CSR, Dr. Weiner was a faculty and founding member of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Notre Dame of Maryland University, School of Pharmacy, where she served for twelve years.
