After receiving her Ph.D. in developmental psychology from the University of Washington, Dr. Joann Wu Shortt dedicated over 15 years to prevention research at the Oregon Social Learning Center. As principal investigator and co-investigator on federally funded projects, her research focused on identifying risk factors for intimate partner violence and children's exposure to family violence. Her efforts also included developing emotion-focused parenting interventions for disproportionately affected populations, which advanced our understanding of parent-child emotion regulation and socialization behaviors. During this time, she served as a standing member of the Psychosocial Development, Risk, and Prevention Study Section. Immediately prior to joining the NIH, Dr. Wu Shortt held the position of lead behavioral scientist at the CDC Injury Center, Division of Violence Prevention. She led the Child Abuse, Neglect, and Adversity team in researching and evaluating programs and policies to identify effective prevention strategies for violence and other adverse childhood experiences, including in American Indian and Alaska Native communities.
