Dr. Anna Babakhanyan received a master’s degree in biotechnology from San Jose State University and her Ph.D. in tropical medicine from the University of Hawaiʻi School of Medicine. She evaluated naturally acquired antibody responses to pregnancy-associated malaria vaccine candidates in Cameroonian pregnant women. As a Fogarty Global Health Fellow, she led a field-based research study in Cameroon that defined the influence of maternal HIV on the transplacental transfer of antibodies to malaria. Subsequently, she joined Case Western Reserve University and received the ASTMH Centennial Travel Award to study humoral immune responses to pregnancy-associated malaria in HIV-infected women at the Kenya Medical Research Institute. In addition, she served as a reviewer for Nature Scientific Reports, Malaria Journal, and the Journal of Infectious Disease. Dr. Babakhanyan then took a science research advisor position at Harvard University and chaired the Mentoring Intensive Workshops Certificate Program. Prior to joining CSR, Dr. Babakhanyan held a research program officer position at the Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Scholarship, University of Hawaiʻi, where she oversaw internal reviews for limited submission grants, identified opportunities for strategic research development, and created the Faculty Puwalu Research Forum.
