Dr. Andersen received her Ph.D. in behavioral neuroscience from the State University of New York at Binghamton. She furthered her training at Harvard Medical School, becoming a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry and directing her laboratory for nearly 30 years. Dr. Andersen studied how exposure to drugs and early adversity interacted with sensitive periods to influence brain development. Her research was primarily aimed at preventing addiction and depression in adolescents and young adults. She received grant support from NIDA, NIMH, NARSAD, and other foundations. Dr. Andersen served on grant review study sections for NIH, NSF, and international funding agencies, including the Wellcome Fund. Dr. Andersen taught multiple undergraduate courses in the Boston area and psychiatry and psychopharmacology to clinical trainees.
