Special Emphasis Panel on Emerging Targets in Neurovascular Disorders and Injury – NPA (83)
This panel reviews applications that study early-stage therapy development, biomarker candidate validation and development in neurovascular disorders and injury. Applications that study molecular mechanisms leading to validation of a target for restoring damages from acute/chronic and acquired/traumatic injuries or neurovascular disorder may also be reviewed here. Approaches may also include development of biomarkers, imaging and computational modeling. Applications that study different animal and ex-vivo models to study neuronal injury and neurovascular disorders may be reviewed here. Applications may be preclinical and may involve human/patient-derived specimens.
Topics
- Approaches to increase blood-brain barrier permeability and/or reduce efflux of therapies
- Drug and therapy delivery across the blood-brain barrier, including screening studies to identify candidate therapies with better CNS penetration, proof of concept studies, optimizing the uptake of molecules including exosomes, nanoparticles and peptides into the CNS or across the blood-nerve barrier.
- Development and validation of biomarkers (imaging, serum) as a readout of neuronal injury and neurovascular disorder
- Approaches to develop and validate novel therapeutic procedures in neuronal injury and neurovascular disorders
- Development and validation of early-stage therapeutics (small molecules, biologics, natural products etc ) in neuronal injuries (acquired/traumatic or acute/chronic and neurovascular disorders
- Identification, development and validation of biomarkers in neurovascular disorders and injuries
Shared Interests and Overlaps
There is significant shared interest between NVBC and NPA-83 on applications studying injury and neurovascular disorders. Both panels review predominantly mechanistic, preclinical and translational studies. Applications that focus on mechanisms underlying BBB structure or function in the context of neuronal injury and neurovascular disorder are reviewed in NVBC, while applications that focus on development or validation of targets, biomarkers, early-stage therapies of neuronal injury and neurovascular disorder are reviewed in NPA-83.
There is significant shared interest between NPA-82 and NPA-83 on applications studying neurovascular disorders. Both panels review preclinical and translational studies. Applications that focus on mechanistic aspects of cognitive impairment and neurodegeneration as an outcome in the context of neurovascular dysfunction are reviewed in NPA-82, while applications that focus on early-stage therapeutics, target validation and biomarker studies in neurovascular disorders are reviewed in NPA-83
There are shared interests between BIND and NPA-83 in reviewing applications on neuronal injury and neurovascular disorders. Applications that are clinical and focus on clinical aspects of brain /spinal cord injury and neurovascular disorder are reviewed in BIND, while applications with a preclinical/ translational focus on early-stage therapeutics, biomarkers and molecular target validation are reviewed in NPA-83.
There is some overlap between NPA-83 and NPB-54 on therapeutic development of neurological disorders. Applications studying therapeutic development in cognitive impairment, neurodegeneration are reviewed in NPB54 while those that are focused on neuronal injury, neurovascular disorders are reviewed in NPA-83.
There is some shared interest between Innovations in Nanosystems and Nanotechnology (INN) and NPA-83 on applications with nanoparticle delivery across the BBB. INN focuses on fundamental development of new enabling materials that take advantage of the unique properties of nanomaterials towards biomedical applications. Applications that focus on biological delivery of nanoparticles or proof of concept studies of nano-delivery across the blood-brain barrier may be reviewed in NPA-83.
There is shared interest between DBTD and NPA-83 on applications studying the BBB. DBTD reviews applications that study fundamental aspects of gene and drug delivery including delivery vehicle development, targeting strategies, and biological barriers using a bioengineering focus. Applications that specifically focus on the delivery to the brain are reviewed in NPA-83.
