NOTE: Starts with the October 2026 Council round submission dates (Cycle I due dates). This study section was evaluated as part of CSR’s ENQUIRE process to align study sections with advances in science. Learn more about ENQUIRE.

The Integrative Approaches in Neurodegeneration Study Section reviews applications to investigate the etiology and pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders. Applications typically propose basic integrated physiological studies of neurodegeneration, and integrated endpoints as a consequence of cellular disturbances using cell-based and vertebrate animal model experimental approaches. Most neurodegenerative disorders are covered, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, frontotemporal dementias, spinal muscular atrophy, acquired dystonias and ataxias, and peripheral neuropathies. Also included are prion diseases.

Review Dates

A roster for the panel will be posted here, at least 30 days prior to the review meeting

Membership Panel

When the panel is chartered as a standing panel, members will be listed here. Expected in 2026.

Topics

  • Functional and physiological consequences of:
    • neurotoxic and environmental insults in neurodegenerative diseases.
    • impaired protein maintenance (e.g., beta amyloid, tau, alpha-synuclein, TDP-43).
    • metabolic abnormalities and the interaction of genetics, epigenetics, environment, drugs, mitochondrial physiology and age on neuronal dysfunction and neurodegenerative diseases.
    • Alterations in synaptic plasticity, neuronal and network activities
    • neurodegenerative states on behavior and cognition.
  • Generation and characterization of genetically modified or induced animal models of neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Identifying and validating therapeutic targets and biomarkers through techniques such as multi-omics.
