Dr. Christopher Payne received his Ph.D. in cell and developmental biology at the Oregon Health and Science University, where he studied the mechanisms regulating cytoskeletal and membrane dynamics during mammalian fertilization. Following postdoctoral training at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, University of Washington, and Jackson Laboratory, he joined the faculty at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine as an assistant professor in the departments of pediatrics and obstetrics and gynecology. His NIH-funded research focused on the genetic and epigenetic regulation of self-renewal and differentiation in male germline stem cells, as well as the identification and development of small molecule inhibitors to reversibly inhibit deubiquitinating enzymes in spermatogenic cells as a means of non-hormonal contraception. He served on several NIH study sections and special emphasis panels as an ad-hoc reviewer.
