Dr. Poonam Pegu received her Ph.D. in infectious diseases and microbiology from the University of Pittsburgh, focusing on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) vaccine design using small animal models. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), leading collaborative preclinical studies of HIV vaccine candidates in non-human primates. She subsequently joined the U.S. Military HIV Research Program at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, where she led the Cellular Immunomonitoring Core Laboratory. She later transitioned to regulatory science, providing scientific and regulatory leadership for an HIV-1 Phase I vaccine clinical trial in Kenya, overseeing multidisciplinary teams, and supporting FDA regulatory submissions. Prior to joining CSR, Dr. Pegu served as a scientific review officer at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). In this role, she managed the peer review of a diverse portfolio of research, training, contract, and multi-component grant applications while contributing to peer review policy, funding initiatives, and several NIH-wide committees.
