Special Emphasis Panel: Integrated Preclinical and Translational Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases – NPB (57)
This panel reviews applications focused on aging as well as the etiology, pathology, progression, and intervention of aging-related neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD). These studies employ cross-species approaches to enhance the translational value of preclinical findings—either by validating results from animal and cell-based models in humans, or by using animal or other non-human models to conduct in-depth testing of mechanisms and interventions suggested by human data. The study section also evaluates secondary data analyses and studies that leverage existing datasets to develop and test new hypotheses.
Review Dates
A roster for the panel will be posted here, at least 30 days prior to the review meeting
Topics
- Mechanistic studies investigating the etiology and progression of ADRD and other neurodegenerative diseases.
- Studies involving human subjects in combination with vertebrate animal models and/or other experimental systems.
- Postmortem studies using human specimens complemented by animal-based assays.
- Secondary analyses or new study design utilizing existing human data including but not limited to neuroimaging, pathology, behavioral measures, and other clinical records.
