Physical Activity, Caregiving, and Chronic Disease Management – CCTD (90)
This panel reviews behavioral interventions across the human lifespan at the individual or small group level and has two primary foci: (1) behavioral physical activity interventions to improve symptom management and health outcomes in healthy aging and chronic disease populations; and (2) supportive care and integrated clinical care interventions to reduce burden and improve the well-being of caregivers of individuals with chronic conditions. Applications may use biopsychosocial and behavioral methods in conjunction with clinical approaches to improve health outcomes, diseases or conditions. Applications may propose a variety of physical activity approaches and may also be implemented remotely, virtually, using mHealth, or in-person. Interventions may also span modes of activity, e.g., aerobic, resistance, or combined exercise and need not have an explicit behavior change mechanism or outcome. Interventions focused on improving caregiver health and well-being may propose a variety of approaches including psychosocial or behavioral processes, therapeutic interventions, and transitional care and/or care planning tools. All applications are in human populations. The study section does not review applications using animal models, or studies focused at the community, health system, or population level.
Review Dates
A roster for the panel will be posted here, at least 30 days prior to the review meeting
Topics
- Supportive care interventions to improve symptoms (e.g., fatigue, cardiometabolic health, cognitive impairment), psychosocial well-being (e.g., anxiety, depression, burnout), and quality of life among individuals with chronic disease (e.g., oncology, ADRD, neurodegenerative conditions) and/or their caregivers;
- Behavioral exercise/physical activity approaches to manage symptoms or improve disease-related health outcomes delivered at the individual or group level;
- Physical activity approaches to improve symptoms, slow cognitive aging, or promote functional independence in aging populations;
- Psychosocial interventions to improve mental health and/or reduce distress in caregivers of individuals with chronic conditions (e.g., cancer, heart failure, Alzheimer’s Disease and Alzheimer’s disease-related dementias [AD/ADRD]);
- Behavioral strategies to prevent long-term adverse effects and improve health outcomes for caregivers.
