Dr. Vinod Charles serves as Chief of the Bioengineering, Biodata, and Biomodeling Technologies Review Branch (BBBT RB).
Dr. Vinod Charles returned to CSR after working in the Division of Extramural Activities at NIH’s National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), where he served in multiple positions including acting review branch chief, group leader for neuroscience review, and as the Associate Director for Training within the division. While at NIMH, he worked on multiple trans-NIH Initiatives such as the Human Connectome Project, The BRAIN Initiative, and PsychENCODE. He earlier served as a Scientific Review Officer in CSR’s Brain Disorders and Clinical Neuroscience Integrated Review Group. Dr. Charles earned his Ph.D. in systems neuroscience from Rush University, studying the efficacy of neurotrophic factor delivery across the blood-brain barrier in an Alzheimer’s animal model. He then did post-doctoral work at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) studying the cellular mechanisms of Huntington’s Disease. While at NHGRI, Dr. Charles was also funded as a PRAT staff fellow via the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. Before joining CSR, Dr. Charles was a program manager in a start-up biotech company, where his work focused on drug discovery and target validation with an emphasis on gene dysregulation in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, and autism.
