Fellowships: Biophysical, Physiological, Pharmacological and Bioengineering Neuroscience – F03B

*Ends after February/March 2023 review meetings
Areas of interest encompassed by this study section include the basic cellular and molecular physiology of neurons, glial, retinal, and other excitable cells. The proposed science may examine the structural and functional characteristics of ion channels and transporters as well as the mechanisms by which extra- and intracellular signals are transduced and the structure and function of the transducers themselves.
Applications with projects investigating basic cellular regulation/physiology, neurochemical and pharmacological mechanisms, including the actions of psychoactive drugs upon channel function are reviewed in this panel. The development of therapeutic compounds including discovery, drug development and toxicology. Finally, all applications involving bioengineering nervous system devices including the development and integration of neuroprosthetic devices are reviewed in F03B.
The List of Reviewers lists all present, whether standing members or temporary, to provide the full scope of expertise present on that date. Lists are posted 30 days before the meeting and are tentative, pending any last minute changes.

Shared Interests and Overlaps
Fellowship panels are broad and cover inter-related areas. Assignments are made based on the primary emphasis of the proposed research. There are some overlaps between topics reviewed by fellowship study sections. For example, in F03B, topics involving the area of drug abuse research are shared with Neurodevelopment, Synaptic Plasticity and Neurodegeneration Fellowship Study Section [F03A] and Behavioral Neuroscience Fellowship Study Section [F02A], while topics related to studies of motor control and nervous system devices overlap with F02A. For any application that may fall between primary areas of study, the CSR Division of Receipt and Referral, IRG chiefs, and SROs confer to place it properly and to ensure that all appropriate expertise is brought to bear.
