Brain Imaging, Vision, Bioengineering and Low Vision Technology Development (BIVT) Recurring SEP reviews applications to develop biomedical imaging for studying problems in the brain and vision systems, be they basic questions of the structure and function of the nervous system, hemodynamics, neurodegenerative, retinal and ocular diseases, questions about their pathogenesis, or clinical/translational challenges. Also covered are vision bioengineering and low vision technology applications.

Review Dates


  • Development of optical microscopy and other imaging modalities, such as high/super-resolution, NIRs and adaptive optics, for visualizing brain, eye, neural cells and circuitry utilizing light/optical approaches.
  • Development of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), ultrasound and photo-acoustic imaging for use in both the brain and the eye
  • Imaging and modeling of blood flow: cerebral hemodynamics using optical, OCT, ultrasound and associated modalities
  • Informatics, machine learning and associated artificial intelligence technologies for use in imaging processing for these techniques
  • Informatics and creation of imaging database resources; computational approaches and image analysis tools.
  • Development of ocular imaging technologies for in vivo, ex vivo, histological, structural, functional and molecular imaging of the eye
  • Ophthalmic imaging applications that emphasize technical development, rather than the application of new technologies to investigate the biology of or disorders of vision.
  • Ocular and retinal eye diseases.
  • Contrast probe development, including nanoparticles, for ocular applications.
  • Therapeutic formulations and drug delivery strategies for treatment of ocular disorders: refinements for targeted bioavailability, improved efficacy.
  • Bioengineering approaches for treatment of eye injury and correction of refractive error: corneal remodeling, other approaches/devices.
  • Development of low vision technologies such as assistive devices for wayfinding, vision rehabilitation tools and techniques, new resources for vision testing

Shared Interests and Overlaps

BIVT overlaps with Imaging Probes and Contrast Agents (IPCA), Cellular and Molecular Technologies (CMT), MNG (Molecular Neurogenetics Study Section), on fluorescence probe development.  The SROs will consult to place applications properly for the most appropriate review.
