Special Emphasis Panel on Neurovascular mechanisms of Cognitive Impairment and Neurodegeneration – NPA (82)
This study section reviews applications that study neurovascular dysfunctions that lead to cognitive impairment, aging and neurodegeneration. Applications reviewed in this panel are predominantly mechanistic and preclinical using relevant animal models. Applications focusing on mechanistic aspects of glymphatic and lymphatic system dysfunction involved in modulation of neurodegeneration and cognitive decline pathways may also be reviewed here. Approaches may include imaging and computational modeling. The study section also reviews applications that emphasize the interplay between vascular pathology and protein clearance mechanisms in the aging and diseased brain.

Shared Interests and Overlaps
There is significant shared interest between NVBC and NPA-82 in reviewing applications on neurovascular dysfunction. Both panels review different aspects of BBB dysfunction and restoration. Applications that focus on aspects of BBB function, development of model systems as a result of acute and chronic injury are reviewed in NVBC, while applications on emphasize protein accumulation and clearance that impact cognitive impairment and neurodegeneration are reviewed in NPA-82.
There is significant shared interest between NPA-82 and NPA-83 on applications studying neurovascular disorders. Both panels review preclinical and translational studies. Applications that focus on mechanistic aspects of cognitive impairment and neurodegeneration as an outcome in context of a neurovascular dysfunction are reviewed in NPA-82, while applications that focus early-stage therapeutics, target validation and biomarker studies in cognitive impairment and neurodegeneration are reviewed in NPA-83
There is shared interest between BIND and NPA-82 in reviewing applications on neurovascular disorders. Clinical studies and studies involving human subjects on neurovascular disorders are reviewed in BIND while preclinical studies on neurovascular dysfunction that impact cognition and neurodegeneration are reviewed in NPA-82
There is shared interest in CPN and NPA-82 in reviewing applications on stroke and neurovascular dysfunction. Applications focusing on post-stroke recovery and adult neurogenesis are reviewed in CPN while applications on neurovascular dysfunction that affect cognition and neurodegeneration are reviewed in NPA-82
There is some shared interest between NPA-82 and ASG in studying applications on neurovascular dysfunction. Clinical studies on neurovascular, glymphatic, and BBB dysfunctions as a part of geriatric syndromes and multiorgan comorbidities including cognitive and physical impairments in older adults are reviewed in ASG. Applications that study mechanisms and changes in neurovascular and glymphatic systems, including cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), during normal aging (vascular aging), when neurovascular dysfunction is the main focus in aging-related degeneration is reviewed in NPA-82.
There is some shared interest between NPA-82 and CDBA on topics of cognitive impairment particularly vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID). There is some shared interest between NPA-82 and CDBA on topics of cognitive impairment. Applications focusing on cognitive impairment at behavioral and functional levels in VCID resulting from aging/age related factors are reviewed in CDBA. Applications studying the neurovascular mechanisms impacting cognition and neurodegeneration are reviewed in NPA-82.
There is some overlap between CNTN and NPA-82 in studying applications on vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID). Human studies on VCID that are in context of dementia and neurodegenerative pathologies are reviewed in CNTN, whereas pre-clinical applications that study vascular dementia in context of vascular and glymphatic systems, clearance mechanism, cerebral blood flow, cardiovascular functions are reviewed in NPA-82.
There is some shared interest between RFN and NPA-82. Both panels review applications on neurodegneration. NPA-82 will review applications that emphasize on the mechanistic aspect of the injury or neurovascular disorder that leads to neurodegeneration and cognitive impairment, while RFN reviews applications that assess the risk factors (genetic, epigenetic environmental) that are responsible for neurogenerative disorders.
There is some shared interest between NPA-82 and PPAN on toxic aggregation of proteins that lead to AD/FTD and other related disorders. Applications on defects of protein misfolding, function and aggregation are reviewed in PPAN, while applications on neurovascular dysfunction impacting protein clearance and glymphatic systems can be reviewed in NPA-82.
There is some shared interest between BTEN and NPA-82 on applications that study imaging and modeling in neurovascular disorders. The applications that focus on technology development, drug delivery are reviewed in BTEN while applications with a mechanistic, clinical or preclinical focus are reviewed in NPA-82.
