The recurring SBIR special emphasis panel, Small Business: Biobehavioral Processes (BP 10) reviews applications that propose technologies that impact or improve biobehavioral, neuromotor, and cognitive processes involved in human development. These include a wide range of psychopathological conditions, neurological diseases and conditions, and developmental disabilities and learning. Interventions employ behavioral strategies that target individual-level risk factors, enhance protective factors, diagnose, treat, provide rehabilitation, and aid in self-care of a range of biobehavioral and behavioral conditions across the lifespan.

Review Dates

Topics

  • Interventions designed to increase treatment adherence, provide rehabilitation, or offer new methodologies to improve health outcomes or prevent the onset of the disease or condition. Disease conditions cover a wide range of developmental disabilities, adult psychopathology, cognition, communication, and neurological diseases.
    • Psychopathology: Mental health disorders such as mood/anxiety, PTSD, suicidality, depression. Stress and emotional states across the lifespan. Approaches here also include complementary/alternative approaches such as tai chi, yoga, mindfulness as it pertains to modifying stress pathways and address a specific psychopathology.
    • Neurological diseases and conditions: Cognition (MCI, ADRD, cognitive improvement), traumatic brain injury, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, aphasia/speech production (e.g., AAT devices), hearing and vision loss, balance/gait/motor disorders (e.g., fall assessment, prevention, and post-fall rehabilitation), and physical therapy rehabilitation.
    • Developmental disabilities: Autism, intellectual disabilities, ADHD, learning issues (e.g., reading, bilingual learning).
  • Interventions that target caregiver mental health, depression, burden, etc. at the individual level.
  • Approaches such as mobile and e-health apps and platforms, artificial intelligence, assessment instruments, serious games, educational software and curricula, virtual and augmented reality applications, sensors, monitors, and other user-oriented devices.

Shared Interests and Overlaps

There are shared interests between Small Business: Clinical Care and Health Interventions (CCHI 10) and BP 10 in the study of individual level risk factors, care, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. Applications that propose the development of tools that address organ-based diseases, pain, nutrition, maternal health, addictions, etc. are reviewed in CCHI 10. Applications that propose technologies to address psychopathological disorders and neurodevelopmental conditions and rehabilitation are reviewed in BP 10.

There are shared interests between Small Business: Health Services and Systems (HSS 10) and BP 10 in the study of ways to improve care and delivery and monitoring of disease. Applications proposing technologies that provide large scale screening, surveillance, and that target service delivery in healthcare settings are reviewed in HSS 10. Applications proposing technologies that are behavioral in scope and at the individual level are reviewed in BP 10.

There are shared interests between Small Business: Social and Community Influences across the Lifecourse study section (SCIL 10) and BP 10 in the study of interventions to address risk factors, monitor health, and manage disease. Applications that propose interventions delivered at the dyadic, family, school, neighborhood, and community-based organizations level that address interpersonal or community-level processes (non-health care organization) are reviewed in SCIL 10. Applications that address individual level risk factors and interventions are reviewed in BP 10.

There are shared interests between Small Business: Musculoskeletal, Skin, and Oral Sciences (MSOS 10) and BP 10 in the study of rehabilitation and human physical health. Applications involving treatment strategies for musculoskeletal, including rehabilitation strategies, orthopedic procedures, implants, assistive technologies, and prosthetic devices are reviewed in MSOS 10. Applications that involve rehabilitation or assistive technologies to influence human health behavior or risk are reviewed in BP 10.

There are shared interests between the small business panels in Neurotechnology and Vision Review Branch (NV) and BP 10 in the study of human neuroscience and cognition. Applications whose aims are related to development of sensors, medical devices, and monitoring systems (e.g., hearing aids, biomarkers, robots, etc.) in the areas of cognitive disorders, brain injury, sleep, vision disorders and trauma are reviewed in NV. Applications that involve neuro-developmental or psychological technologies to measure or influence human health behavior or risk are reviewed in BP 10.
