This special emphasis panel reviews applications that emphasize on preclinical, translational and clinical aspects of immune signaling and inflammation in neurological disorders. This panel also reviews applications infectious diseases of the nervous system that modulate the neuroimmune response. Applications reviewed in this panel include studies using both laboratory animals and humans.

Review Dates

Topics

  • Preclinical and translational research on neurological injury that lead to activation of immune and inflammatory responses.
  • Clinical, preclinical and translational studies on neuroimmune basis of vascular cognitive impairment (VCID)
  • Immunological activation of the nervous system (activation of microglia and astrocytes, infiltration of peripheral immune cells) in response to neuroinfectious diseases.
  • Preclinical and clinical studies on inflammatory responses and CNS damages due to neuroinfectious diseases.
  • Neuroimmune modulation in psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders
  • Gut microbiome mediated inflammation in CNS in response to neuronal injury neurological disorder.
  • Preclinical and clinical studies on identifying biomarkers in neuroimmune disorders

Shared Interests and Overlaps

There is substantial shared interest with (CNBT) study section. Applications that focus on molecular and cellular mechanisms, developing preclinical, cellular and animal models, developing and testing therapeutic strategies modulating or modifying immunological and inflammatory processes are reviewed in CNBT while applications that emphasize on immune activation of nervous system in response to infection or injury are reviewed in CN-85.

There is some overlap with (CNNT). Applications that aim to understand the mechanisms of epilepsy, spinal cord injury and neurodegeneration are reviewed in CNNT while application of these pathologies that trigger an immunological response or inflammation of the CNS can come to SEP CN 85

There is some overlap with (BINP) study section. Applications that investigate mechanisms of brain injury and to test potential therapies in animal models of different kinds of stroke and injury should be reviewed in BINP. Application that emphasizes the role of immune system or inflammation in driving or in context of brain injury, stroke, VCID or ischemia should come to SEP CN-85.

There is some shared interest with (DBD).Applications that are focused on developmental brain disorders  in pediatric population are reviewed in DBD. Application study immune activation or immunological signaling in brain development disorder are reviewed in CN-85.

There is some overlap with (ZRG1 AN 55) study section. Applications on neuroimmune function and neuroinflammation involved in the pathogenesis, pathophysiology, progression, prognosis, biomarkers, and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia (ADRD), and related disorders go to AN 55. Application that study neuroinflammation and neuroimmune basis of cognition in response to injury or neurological disorder can be reviewed in CN-85.
