The Special Emphasis Panel on brain, neuronal injury and neurovascular disorder reviews applications that investigate mechanisms of acute and chronic brain and neuronal injury.

Applications considered by NPA-81 may address, but are not limited to, pre-clinical, translational and clinical studies on neuronal injury and neurovascular disorders. These may include model development, mechanisms (genetic, epigenetic and cellular) underlying neurovascular disorder, imaging studies to elucidate pathology.

Shared Interests and Overlaps

There is significant shared interest between NVBC and NPA-81. Both panels review applications on mechanistic, pre-clinical and translational injury and neurovascular disorders. NPA-81 primarily focuses on mechanistic aspects and model development of these areas while NVBC primarily reviews applications that emphasize the role of BBB and clearance in these disorders.

There is substantial shared interest in CPN and NPA-81 in applications studying brain and neuronal injury in preclinical models. Applications on preclinical model development for TBI and stroke and some epilepsy resulting from neuronal/brain injury are reviewed both in NPA-81 and CPN. NPA-81 will review applications that are on basic mechanisms of neurovascular and neuronal injury that impact cognitive impairment, chronic and acute brain injury. Applications on injury and circuit disorder that focus on electrophysiology, optogenetics and neuroimaging arereviewed in CPN.

There is substantial shared interest between Brain Injury and Neurovascular Disorders (BIND) study section and NPA-81 in reviewing applications that focus on neurovascular disorders. While BIND will review clinical studies on cognitive impairment and neurovascular disorder and primarily reviews applications on human subjects/specimens, NPA-81 can review applications that study these areas in pre-clinical models.

There is some shared with Developmental Brain Disorder Study section (DBD) and NPA-81 in reviewing applications on pediatric population. While studies on pediatric brain development and injury are reviewed in DBD, some preclinical model development and animal experimental studies can be reviewed in NPA-81

There is some shared interest with NPA 81 and NPA-85 study section. Applications that investigate mechanisms of brain injury and to test potential therapies in animal models of different kinds of stroke and injury should be reviewed in NPA 81. Application that emphasizes the role of immune system or inflammation in driving or in context of brain injury, stroke, VCID or ischemia should come to NPA-85.

There is shared interest with NP A-81 and NSDS in applications studying neural injury and brain ischemia applications. NSDS reviews applications investigating components of basic molecular signaling in cell death or protection pathways as well as applications dealing with cellular bioenergetics, while NP A-81 reviews applications on brain and neuronal injury and neurovascular disorders that are preclinical and translational.

There is shared interest between NPA 81 and BMGS in reviewing applications on brain/neuronal injury and neurovascular disorders. Applications that emphasize vascular abnormalities and alterations in the blood-brain barrier may be reviewed in NPA-81. Basic mechanistic or developmental studies on blood-brain barrier cells or neurovascular structure and function are likely reviewed in BMGS.
