After receiving a Ph.D. in anatomy from University of California, San Francisco, Dr. Ahlgren trained at the University College London and then at the California Institute of Technology.  She also trained undergraduates in neurochemistry and developmental neurobiology at California State University, Los Angeles. Dr. Ahlgren then took a faculty position in the Department of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.  She studied craniofacial and neural development there with support from the NIH and March of Dimes.  She was also appointed the Crown Family Research Scholar. During that time, she served on numerous NIH study sections and taught courses in neuroscience and developmental biology for Ph.D. and MD/Ph.D. students.
