After receiving a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of New Mexico, Dr. Lewis trained at the University of Michigan Medical School in biostatistics. Dr. Lewis then took a faculty position in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Oklahoma. He studied the human microbiome and led training programs in biomedical research, with support from the NIH and NSF. He taught courses that intersect biology and anthropology, with particular attention to genomics and population-based research. He chaired or served on committees for graduate students in these fields. Dr. Lewis also served on numerous NIH study sections.
