This study section reviews SBIR and STTR grant applications involving development of instrumentation and devices for biomedical sensing, measurement, diagnosis and surgery. The work on innovative sensors may range from fundamental physical, material or chemical transduction through basic measurement principles to the design of novel instruments in the context of clinical use. The work on innovative devices may range from basic components to complete devices and extends to materials for surgical procedural and wound healing applications.

Review Dates

Topics

  • Biosensors (e.g., chemical, immunochemical, optical and electrochemical etc.) for investigating, monitoring, diagnosing and treating disorders; developing novel sensor solutions for healthcare.
  • Medical, therapeutic and biotechnology products, and devices based on biosensors, arrays, nanotechnology, therapeutics, drug delivery platforms, microfluidics or micro electro-mechanical systems.
  • Surgery and wound healing-related materials and their applications.

Shared Interests and Overlaps

ISB (11) and ISB (10) have shared interests in optical systems. Applications that are more focused on sensors are typically assigned to ISB (11). Applications that are more focused on imaging are typically assigned to ISB (10).

ISB (11) and ISB (12) have shared interests in biomedical devices and engineering technology including sensor, balloon and catheter etc. Applications that are focused on the devices with material engineering are typically assigned to ISB (11). Applications that are focused on the devices with mechanical engineering are typically assigned to ISB (12).

ISB (11) and MCST (12) have shared interests in instrumentation and systems development. Applications that are focused on devices and systems primarily targeted to healthcare and clinical use are typically assigned to ISB (11). Applications that focus on instrumentation and systems for molecular imaging, biomedical research and early stage development of portable point of care devices are typically assigned to MCST (12).

There are shared interests between the Small Business: Clinical Care and Health Interventions (CCHI 10) and ISB 11 in the study of medical sensing devices. Applications are reviewed in ISB if the aims focus on advanced development and design of biomedical sensing technologies, devices and systems in the context of healthcare and clinical use. Applications are reviewed in CCHI 10 if the aims involve the use of medical sensing devices to influence health risks and behaviors, and for clinical effectiveness.

There are shared interests between the small business panels in the Imaging, Surgery, and Bioengineering Review Branch (ISB) and Small Business: Health Services and Systems (HSS 10) in the study of medical sensing devices. Applications are reviewed in ISB if the aims focus on advanced development and design of biomedical sensing technologies, devices and systems in the context of healthcare and clinical use. Applications are reviewed in HSS 10 if the aims involve the use of large-scale clinical and bioinformatic data to develop technologies for use in clinical practice and clinical decision-support.
