*Ends after October 2024 council round meetings

The Adult Psychopathology and Disorders of Aging Study Section focuses on laboratory-based, experimental, and observational studies of the behavioral sequelae of adult-origin psychopathology, including behavioral, cognitive and emotional disorders, as well as behavioral/cognitive disorders of aging in adults. Behavioral, cognitive, socioemotional, neurobiological, behavioral and molecular genetics, and neuroimaging approaches are examined.

The emphasis is on human behavioral studies of etiology, diagnosis, phenotypic description, comorbidity, and intervention in adult-origin disorders. APDA does not review animal model applications and population-based research in humans.

The List of Reviewers lists all present, whether standing members or temporary, to provide the full scope of expertise present on that date. Lists are posted 30 days before the meeting and are tentative, pending any last minute changes.

Membership Panel

The membership panel is a list of chartered members only.

Topics

  • Adult Psychopathology: Diagnosis, etiology, comorbidity, clinical course and outcomes in mental health disorders of adult origin, including schizophrenia, mood and anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, substance use disorders, and personality disorders.
  • Disorders of Aging: Diagnosis, etiology, comorbidity, and course in deficits and disorders associated with aging, including dementia, mild cognitive impairment, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Biological, genetic and neural factors underlying aging disorders and adult psychopathology with emphasis on the relationship between these factors and clinical or functional behavioral profile over time.
  • Acquired Disorders in adulthood: Disorders affecting behavioral outcome including studies of acquired deficits and disorders due to traumatic brain injury or substance abuse.
  • Intervention studies: Research addressing identification, treatment and/or rehabilitation methods for adults with psychopathology or disorders of aging.

Shared Interests and Overlaps

Neural Basis of Psychopathology, Addictions, and Sleep Disorders (NPAS): Applications that focus predominantly on understanding brain mechanisms of psychopathology in humans are reviewed in NPAS. Applications focusing on the behavioral phenotypes of these disorders are reviewed in APDA.

Child Psychopathology and Developmental Disorders (CPDD): Applications focusing on psychopathology of childhood origin are assigned to CPDD. Studies of adults affected by developmental disorders (e.g., autism, ADHD) are more appropriately reviewed in CPDD.

Biobehavioral Mechanisms of Emotion, Stress, and Health (MESH): Applications that focus on adult psychopathology are reviewed in MESH if stress-responsive biological systems are invoked as mechanisms or outcome measures. Applications involving sleep or circadian rhythms and their disorders in humans and their relation to physical or mental health are also reviewed in MESH.

Clinical Neuroscience and Neurodegeneration (CNN): Applications with primary emphasis on the neural mechanisms/outcomes of chronic neurodegenerative/cognitive disorders are reviewed in CNN.

Human Complex Mental Function (HCMF): Applications focusing on aging and cognition in healthy or premorbid populations are reviewed in HCMF.

There are shared interests in cognitive aging with Aging, Injury, Musculoskeletal, and Rheumatologic Disorders (AIMR). Applications that take a mechanistic approach to cognitive aging, especially laboratory-based human studies, are reviewed in APDA. Applications that emphasize the process of aging in human subpopulations with an epidemiological study approach is reviewed in AIMR.
