The Etiology, Diagnostic, Intervention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases (EDIT) study section reviews translational and applied applications that address the emergence, diagnosis, surveillance and control of infectious diseases that affect humans. It considers applications involving bacteria, viruses (excluding HIV), fungi, parasites and other infectious agents such as prions and bacteriophages.

The membership panel is a list of chartered members only.

Topics

  • Clinical studies and field research for the development and evaluation of treatment and prevention strategies to combat infectious diseases
  • Studies that identify pathogenic factors and potential control strategies in the emergence and spread of infectious diseases in humans
  • Diagnostic tools for the detection, identification, and field monitoring of infectious diseases
  • Molecular etiology of infectious diseases, including genetic characterization of the pathogen and the host immune responses on a large scale setting
  • Studies that address the potential infectious etiology of uncharacterized pathologies

Shared Interests and Overlaps

There are shared interests in the epidemiology of infectious diseases and characterization of immune responses with Population-based Research in Infectious Disease (PRID). Applications that are intended to inform on population-level attributes, including immunological, genetic, epigenetic, behavioral, social and environmental factors determinants of infectious disease may be reviewed in PRID. Applications that are intended to inform on pathogen characteristics or that employ population-level analyses to inform on fundamental human immune responses to pathogens are reviewed in EDIT.

There are shared interests in infectious disease transmission modeling with Analytics and Statistics for Population Research Panel B (ASPB). Applications that emphasize the development and validation of infectious disease modeling methodology focused on the transmission in human populations may be reviewed in ASPB. Applications that emphasize microbial ecology and monitoring pathogens during the transmission of infectious diseases may be reviewed in EDIT.

There are shared interests with Immunity and Host Defense (IHD) in analyzing human immune responses. Applications that emphasize human cells or small-scale human sample analyses may be reviewed in IHD. Applications that emphasize population-level analyses or clinical trials may be reviewed in EDIT.

There are shared interests in with Prokaryotic Molecular and Cellular Biology (PCMB), Bacterial Virulence (BV) and Bacterial-Host Interactions (BHI) in the general area of bacterial pathogens. Applications that focus on mechanistic in vitro studies and animal models of bacterial diseases may be reviewed in PCMBBV, or BHI. Applications that focus on population-based studies examining human-bacterial interactions, epidemiology, therapeutics, prophylactics, or diagnostics may be reviewed in EDIT.

There are shared interests in eukaryotic pathogens with Pathogenic Eukaryotes Study Section (PTHE). Applications that emphasize mechanistic in vitro studies and animal models of eukaryotic pathogens may be reviewed in PTHE. Applications that focus on population-based studies examining human-eukaryote interactions, epidemiology, therapeutics, prophylactics, or diagnostics may be reviewed in EDIT.

There are shared interests in general virology with Molecular and Cellular Biology of Virus Infection (MCV), Viral Pathogenesis and Immunity (VPI), and Viral Dynamics and Transmission (VDT). Applications that emphasize mechanistic in vitro studies and animal models of viral diseases may be reviewed in MCV, VPI, or VDT. Applications that focus on population-based studies examining human-virus interactions, epidemiology, therapeutics, prophylactics, or diagnostics of viral infections may be reviewed in EDIT.

There are shared interests in etiology, maintenance and evolutionary outcomes of infectious diseases  with Genetic Variation and Evolution (GVE). Applications that emphasize a genomic focus or wish to understand genetic variation among host or pathogen with the use of modeling may be reviewed in GVE. Applications that emphasize the origin/etiological determination of infectious agents in human diseases may be reviewed in EDIT.

There are shared interests in infectious disease control surveillance and prevention with Transmission of Vector-Borne and Zoonotic Diseases (TVZ). Applications that focus primarily on vector-borne and zoonotic pathogens may be reviewed in TVZ. Applications that emphasize all other pathogens may be reviewed in EDIT.

There are shared interests in studies of vaccines approved for human use with Vaccines Against Infectious Diseases (VID). Applications that focus on vaccine safety or on modifying the composition of existing vaccines are reviewed in VID. Applications that focus on mechanisms of vaccine efficacy, including immune responses and population-level studies, are reviewed in EDIT.
